“WALANG PEKENG BIGAS SA PINAS” National Food Authority Administrator Jason L.Y. Aquino (2nd from left) shows the physical characteristics of genuine rice during a press conference called by the Grains Retailers Confederation of Philippines, Inc. (GRECON) headed by National President James Magbanua (2nd from right), to allay fears of the public against fake rice being sold in the markets. In a statement, GRECON denounce irresponsible sharing of fake news on social media, especially those involving rice. They assured the public that they are responsible rice retailers who will not sell fake rice because it will not benefit them but rather destroy their business, taint their reputation and create unnecessary panic. They also called on concerned government agencies such as NFA, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) to address the issue on “fake rice” by identifying those unscrupulously spreading fake news and those taking advantage of the situation. At left is NFA-Food Development Center Director Jocelyn Sales who presented results of the FDC analyses on samples of alleged fake rice that turned out to be real rice. At right is Orlando Manuntag, president of GRECON-South District Office.
